May 1, 2020 - I remember when I saw my first Giacometti statue. It was in the Foundation Maeght, near St Paul de Vence, in Provence. The gallery was founded by two local art dealers, Marguerite and Aimé Maeght, who were friends with many of great figures of modernism.

Anonymous and alone, he is also almost a skeleton. For the Existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre, in fact, Giacometti's sculpture was "always halfway between nothingness and being." Such sculptures were full of meaning to Sartre, who said of them, "At first glance we seem to be up against the fleshless martyrs of Buchenwald. If the horror vacui, a notion attributed to Aristotle, extends to painters and physicists alike, Giacometti, on the other hand—as Sartre claimed—“wears his vacuum as a snail its shell, because he wants to explain all its facets and dimensions” (“The Paintings of Giacometti,” 1954, in Alberto Giacometti: The Origin of Space, exh. cat., Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, 2010, pp. 239 and 240). Rosalind Krauss in Artforum 2001 quoting Sartre in 1948 on Giacometti: “Giacometti,” Sartre wrote, “has restored an imaginary and indivisible space to statues.

He was the first to take it into his head to sculpt man as he appears, that is to say, from a distance.” Giacometti was one of the most important sculptors of the 20th century. His work was particularly influenced by artistic styles such as Cubism and Surrealism. Philosophical questions about the human condition, as well as existential and phenomenological debates played a significant role in his work. With his solid features, full lips, hair combed closely to the scalp and thick glasses, Sartre was a characterful subject for Giacometti's intense and probing linear style. These portraits are the record of a long friendship, and a significant intellectual partnership as well. Giacometti first met Sartre in a Paris caf in 1939. Sartre and Giacometti were friends and Sartre promoted Giacometti, not directly as an existential artist, but the essays he wrote about Giacometti’s work had a definite existential flavour.

Sartre sees Giacometti’s sculpted “creatures” for “wholly and immediately what they are,” and states quite accurately that they “can neither be studied nor observed” (397). Giacometti has been able to give this matter the only truly human unity: the unity of the Act. Such, I think, is the sort of Copernican revolution Giacometti has tried to introduce into sculpture. Before him the effort was to sculpt being, and that absolute melted away in an infinity of appearances.
